“First time on the market” has got to be one of our favorite phrases in selling architectural homes. Case Study architect Whitney R Smith along with his partner Wayne Richard Williams were commissioned to build this Bird Streets home circa 1949. It does appear that original details like the gorgeous wood paneling and Japanese screens have been well preserved. Let’s hope the buyer takes on the stewardship in preserving this house.

A major appeal of watching classic 50’s and 60’s movies is for architecture, furniture and fashion design. I remember a scene in That Touch of Mink featuring Doris Day and Cary Grant taking place in a food hall called an Automat. I was fascinated by this “futuristic” concept. Well, for those hungry for more information on the history of these establishments, there’s a fascinating documentary out now aptly titled, The Automat. http://automatmovie.com/

Cobra Studios Art Deco Transformation The future of the ideal post covid office space is still TBD. But, if we can expect it to look anything like this futuristic 30’s Art Deco transformation in Belgium by @cobra_studios, we’re in! Thanks to @_sightunseen_ for turning us onto this.
Cobra studios is a Brussels based creative studio founded by Kenny Decommer and Hugues Delaunay. Cobra studios is created to counterbalance the current furniture and design scene. Based on a post-modernistic aesthetic, the goal is to collide geometrical shapes in order to create new usable volumetrics. Transparency, translucency and opacity are countered to create sculptural pieces. Contradiction is key, the world is boring, let’s indulge the pieces with colour. Hard shapes need to collide with soft touches. The pieces need to be minimalistic yet very decorative. Every piece needs to withstand time and art movements. Cobra Studios tends towards creating a world of its own, a certain form of light living, naïve but such fun.

It’s with a heavy heart that we report the demolition of a John Lautner designed home. We have nothing against Chris Martin, but as an artist, he should be on the side of conservation and appreciate the architecture and artistry of one of the most influential residential architects of the last century. Or, don’t buy the home. R.I.P. Lautner’s Garwood Residence.
