215 LA VEREDA ROAD, PASADENA | $4,250,000 | 4 BD | 2 BA

Art Center College of Design was at the center of Don and Sally Kubly’s universe. Both as alumni, and later when Don became the second president of the institution. The Kubly’s selected Ellwood to design a modern residence to house their growing family.  Attracted to the iconoclastic personality of Craig Ellwood, and cutting-edge work of his firm.

Incredible walls of glass overlook sparkling pool and rear yard.

Known for designing case study houses #16, #17, and #18. Working in wood and glass, Ellwood created a transparent horizontal box. Then elevated it like a pavilion among the massive gum and oak trees shading the site.

An engineered box with the delicacy to interface with nature. The residence is 2,156 square feet with a .61 acre lot, and includes 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a sparkling swimming pool.

Dramatic living area next to the kitchen with walls of glass.

As a Modern designer, Ellwood liked the structural qualities of steel as well as its beauty. He hoped the Kubly House would be his last wood-frame house. He was known as much for his exquisitely designed, minimalist structures as he was for his exuberant lifestyle.

Classic design in the primary bathroom.

The resulting post and beam structure proved fitting for the Pasadena neighborhood where his contemporaries, several of them also Case Study architects, practiced their craft.
