Cool in the Community

What to do on a slightly grey day in May? Well, we decided to take a peek at some private gardens being highlighted by the Windsor Square Hancock Park Historical Society. “All Gardens, Great and Small” led us through a variety of backyards of homeowners with a green thumb (or at least their gardeners have one). And, we even got to see a Paul R Williams architectural home we’d not visited before. We’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Calabama Hot Sauce and Breakfast Sandwiches

ORDER HERE: https://calabama.la/   |  @calabama

Recently our friends @thebillhorn and @scoutmasterson visited one of our “Cool in the Community” peeps @calabama to experience the breakfast sandwich bucket drop.

A little Sunday fun with a delicious payoff!

An all too familiar byproduct of the pandemic is social distancing. This of course has affected us social beings in countless ways. Our heart goes out to all the struggling restaurants and we’re thankful for the delivery apps to keep us fed. But we’re especially impressed with the creativity of Cara Haltiwanger, local LA chef and bar tender. She’s created mouthwatering breakfast sandwiches which she delivers via a bucket drop from a 4th story brick building in East Hollywood. She’s not only satisfying our food cravings but allows us to get out of the house and experience a bit of community in a creative setting. Kudos to Cara. Who would have thunk that one day we’d be eating breakfast from a bucket?

Asante Microfarm | Crop Swap LA™ Project
Doing Good by the Community.
We came across Asanti Microfarms awhile back. They’re part of this larger group called Crop Swap LA. The tag line is We Grow Food in Unused Spaces. We thought the concept is such a cool way to contribute and give back to the community. Take a look……

Asante Microfarm | Installed in a South Los Angeles front yard

  • Grows more than 600 organically grown vegetable plants
  • Automatically captures and recycles water
  • Stores 660 gallons of water for use to grow more food.

Asante is a Swahli word meaning thank you, and Crop Swap LA™ is full of gratitude to the many people who made this demonstration farm possible.

Crop Swap LA™ donates 10% of the harvest to the community and to sell most of the rest within just a few miles of the microfarm, to neighborhoods that are home to people most affected by food apartheid.

The Art Room
The Art Room Creative Space and Restaurant

“So you’re familiar with hybrid cars and hybrid dogs right? But, let’s not be overly impressed by the combination of merely two things. Designed by AUX Architecture, the Art Room is a 7,750 square foot creative space housing a restaurant, art gallery, studio and venue for creative collaborations with artists, designers, musicians, architects, chefs, baristas, mixologists, photographers and performers. Take that, Saint Berdoodle and Noofypoo! You’ve got nothing on The Art Room. We’re so excited to eat, art gaze and pop in some ear plugs for the big music show.

What’s really great is the as yet untitled restaurant will be helmed by D Brandon Walker. We hear he’s a big proponent of helping folks with hardships get back on their feet thru culinary training. If all this isn’t reason enough to check out The Art Room, well , you still have the Prius to fall back on.”

Victory Garden LA

A lot of us have figured out things to do to occupy our free time during the pandemic. Some constructive, some not so much. One of the more popular outlets has been gardening. We at Modern Living LA are very impressed with the folks at Victory Garden LA. One victory garden for personal use led to three more for a friend.

A much welcomed business was formed. Their tag line reads “a group of out of work industry types, trying to pay our bills, one beautiful planter box at a time”. Well let’s help them pay those bills while giving us something to look forward to working on over the weekend.
