It’s been a moment since we’ve seen a Cliff May house hit the market. Known as the father of the California Ranch House, he was said to have designed over 1,000 custom homes for Southern CA residents. Many of these historic homes have become the epitome of the California life style. Smack dab in one of our favorite neighborhoods, Los Feliz, sits this renovated architectural “v” style layout home. Just in time for Summer.

WATCH THE STUDIO – APPLE TV+ (CV)

Watch The Studio – Apple TV+ (CV)

At Modern Living LA, we love seeing architectural homes featured in Movies and TV. From Richard Neutra’s Lovell House in L.A. Confidential to the Schaffer House by John Lautner in Tom Ford’s “A Single Man”. Well, we just started watching “The Studio” on Apple TV+, and let’s just say the producers took this concept into hyper drive. The setting of the fictional “Continental Studios” is actually Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House in Los Feliz. The beloved actress Catherine O’hara plays a recently fired executive who lives in John Lautner’s Harvey House located in the Oaks of Los Feliz. In the real world, the house has been owned by the actress Kelly Lynch for many years. A film shoot for a cringe worthy scene takes place at John Lautner’s Silver Top in Silver Lake. The filmmakers either had a lot of flex or a massive location budget as I’m sure these shoots didn’t come cheap. And much to our surprise, it is revealed at the end of the episode that the recently appointed studio head, Matt Remick (played by Seth Rogan), lives in one of our very favorite houses we’ve had the pleasure of selling, John Lautner’s Carling House in the Hollywood Hills located off the Sunset Strip. The tv series is a parody of the Hollywood behaviors exhibited by the various players in the industry. The outstanding documentary by Thom Anderson, “Los Angeles Plays Itself” alludes to the idea that Hollywood often portrays these modernist homes as the lair of the villain. So, what are they trying to say here?

PASADENA WALLACE NEFF, THE ANDREW NEFF HOUSE

Pasadena Wallace Neff, The Andrew Neff House

Pasadena Wallace Neff, The Andrew Neff House

1097 S LOS ROBLES AVENUE, PASADENA | $1,850,000 | 2 BD | 2 BA

Wow. What if the Flintstone’s and the Jetson’s homes had a rendezvous? The result may very well be something like this Airform futurist modern residence by Wallace Neff. The Andrew Neff house circa 1946 even comes with your very own bomb shelter. I guess that makes it a true “atomic” age modern home.
