The Lost Lautner. We remember a decade ago when this architectural gem was uncovered and in need of a thoughtful renovation.

Set on over a third of an acre in the Echo Park Hills, this early mid-century modern home is a rare example of John Lautner’s emerging architectural voice, created soon after his six-year apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright.

The design reflects Lautner’s evolving philosophy: organic connection to the landscape, experimental structural expression, and a cinematic approach to space, light, and geometry.

Wright’s Usonian influence is clear, horizontal lines, compact footprint, redwood and concrete palette, and deliberate compression and release, yet Lautner’s adventurous thinking shines. Seven pairs of triangular Douglas Fir timbers form a central spine supporting an inverted triangular truss roof, lifting the ceiling and freeing expansive glass walls that open to the canyon.

Commissioned by polymath Jules Salkin, the home was long obscured by later additions. In 2014, the current owner, with architect Barbara Bestor, restored it to its original form, reconstructing clerestory windows, reviving woodwork, correcting fireplace details, and preserving the iconic Cherokee red concrete floors.

Contemporary updates include black phenolic resin countertops, handmade ceramic tile, built-in appliances, and refined details.

Designated a Historic Landmark, the property also offers Mills Act benefits for notable property-tax savings.
