Los Angeles native, Richard Dorman (1922-2010), was a highly regarded architect, known for his mid-century modern work throughout Southern California. After serving as a pilot in the US Air Force during World War II, Dorman graduated from the University of Illinois, eventually studying architecture at the University of Southern California on the GI Bill.

At the age of 39, Dorman was featured on the cover of a LIFE magazine special issue, “The Take-Over Generation,” at this time he had over sixty projects in the works and was president of two architectural firms, including chief designer at Welton Becket and Associates. Dorman was quoted as saying, “I want to upgrade everything.” In 1956, he left to start his own firm – connecting with a wealthy clientele he built stunning custom homes utilizing his refined post-and-beam construction concept, including several houses in celebrity filled Trousdale Estates. Dorman’s signature use of thin wood slats as exterior cladding allowed for a complex play of light and shadow, serving both as screening for privacy as well as visual interest.
