Born in Pittsburgh and raised in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, Gregory Ain (1908-1988), was as much a social activist as he was a visionary architect. For a short time, Ain’s family lived at an experimental collective farming colony in California’s Antelope Valley, founded by socialist Job Harriman, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate his father supported. Ain believed Modern architecture could truly improve people’s lives.

Inspired by the work of Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler, Ain attended USC’s School of Architecture but dropped out after a year, disillusioned by the traditional Beaux Arts part of the training. He went to work for Neutra from 1930 to 1935 – actually living in Neutra’s VDL Research House during this time. Ain brought elements of modern architecture to lower and medium cost housing – designing innovative single-family homes, cooperative housing and apartment complexes. Fostering the concept of indoor-outdoor living, flexible floor plans and open kitchens, he designed tract communities, with the most successful of these being the Mar Vista Tract, built in 1948.
